Egyptian-Saudi project to launch solar energy plant worth $6b: Official

Solar Energy is increasingly supported in Egypt

Cairo Post

CAIRO: As a move toward boosting Egypt’s production of generated electricity along with overcoming the electricity crisis, a major solar energy plant will be established at El-Wadi El-Gadid region with $6 billion of joint Egyptian-Saudi Arabian financing, Youm7 reported Sunday.

Muharram Hilal, head of Tenth of Ramadan InvestorAssociation told Youm7 Sunday “Construction works are scheduled to start as soon as all required licenses and regulations are acquired.”The government aims through contracting on constructing such plants to diversify electricity sources, boost Egypt’s production of electricity along with overcoming the current shortage of power supply and avoiding frequent power cuts.Hilal calls on the government “represented in the Ministry of Electricity” to define the tariffs of the electricity generated from renewable energy as it is considered the core reason for private sector companies to refrain from joining investment at new renewable energy sectors.Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker announced in late June that the ministry hopes to boost the private sector’s participation in generating power by 67 percent along with raising the share of renewable energy sources by 20 percent of the country’s total electricity production, Mubasher reported in June.

“The Ministry seeks through inviting the private sector to invest in the power sector to expand finance sources along with increasing Egypt’s production of electricity and overcoming frequent power cuts,” he said.Over the past few months,Egypt has been suffering a shortage in electricity supply and frequent power cuts that caused uproar and public anger, it stated, pointing out that electricity officials blame fuel shortage and the out-dated stations with the current shortage in electricity. The Ministry of Petroleum ordered Saturday 16 Aug. an additional six million tons of oil equivalent to power stations in response to the Ministry of Electricity’s urgent calls to avoid frequent power cuts in the upcoming period, Al-Mal Business daily reported Saturday.

Minister of Electricity to announce New Power Plant

Mohamed Shokry

In a statement issued on Tuesday 12 August, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity, Mohamed Shaker, announced that the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has signed a LE310 million ($43.4 million) contract to develop a power plant. The plant is located in South Helwan, a suburb of Greater Cairo and forms part of the Ministry’s on going five-year plan, set to run until 2017, that aims to develop Egypt’s electric grid. This is crucial in order to secure a reliable power supply for Egypt, which continues to see a steady growth in demand for energy.

The project will be financed by several organisations, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. According to Shaker, the total investment in the project is expected to amount to LE12.5 billion.
